The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort to establish a single set of clear educational standards for English-language arts and mathematics that states can share and voluntarily adopt. The standards have been informed by the best available evidence and the highest state standards across the country and globe and designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators, so they reflect both our aspirations for our children and the realities of the classroom. These standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce and that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. The standards are benchmarked to international standards to guarantee that our students are competitive in the emerging global marketplace.

In July 2010, the State of Florida adopted into law that they would be implementing Common Core State Standards by 2014-2015 school year. Duval County Public Schools have started the process of moving to these standards in 2011-12 (and away from the Sunshine State Standards) by launching it's reading initative Read It Forward Jax and align Kindergarten and 1st grade to the standards.

Grassroots Advocacy and CCSSI
The Duval County Council of PTAs received a grant from the National PTA to inform our members and Northeast Florida population about CCSSI and to train them in grassroots advocacy. With the money from the grant, DCC PTA has developed a series of workshops to help citizens become more effective advocates with decision makers. The sweeping changes coming soon for our public education stakeholders, it is imparative that they have the tools in which to advocate for their children's education. With these tools, our parents will be able to advocate effectively from small issues (having a crossing guard at a busy intercetion) to large issues (create a sustainable formula for funding public education)
